Why are prices SO high, but still increasing all the time?

In her excellent expose on our current healthcare system, Dr. Elisabeth Rosenthal discusses the case of a New York college professor's experience with medical price inflation bordering on fraud. Download a sample or buy the book.

Why do health insurance premiums increase yearly at factors often 10x inflation?

"Co-pay" Insurance protected consumers' budgets, but made MOST medical purchasing non-competitive. Prices and premium increases routinely dwarf overall inflation. The ACA, or "ObamaCare" has done the opposite of fostering competition. The 85% standard**Insurance plans under the ACA are mandated to pay out 85% of collected premiums for provider reimbursements. has resulted in exploding inflation of reimbursements. Insurers pass on these payout costs through premium hikes.

"Codes" are how Healthcare Providers a) report what they did and b) bill you.

Most Health Insurers tell you the codes and the descriptions on your E.O.B. and some Providers do as well. If the billing code is missing, we'll help you, or you can ask your Provider or Insurer to provide this information.
